Closer by Circa: cast Q & A

23rd Mar 2016

We got closer to the cast of Circa's brand new show to find out a little more about them in the lead up to the opening of Closer, Udderbelly's headline circus show...

Kimberley O’Brien

1. How long have you been in Circa? 6 years

2.  What’s your favourite part of performing? Being on stage and seeing the audience’s reactions to things.

3.  Have you performed in London before? I was there with How Like an Angel in 2012 and with Opus in 2014

4. What are you most looking forward to about spending your summer in London? Actually having time to live in a place! I have never stayed somewhere longer than 3 weeks on tour so it's really exciting to live and perform somewhere for this amount of time. I will be going to alllllllllll the vintage shops.

5. If you had a giant purple cow, what would you name it? (our cow is named Violet!) It’d be called Cadbury the cow

6. Who are you closest to? My husband, Daniel

7. Help us get closer to you, tell us something about yourself we wouldn’t expect. I love gaming in my spare time.

8. What’s your acrobatic party trick? The ‘up the nose and out the mouth’ trick featured in Circa’s ‘Wunderkammer’. It’s when you get a long balloon and snort it up one of your nostrils until it reaches the back of your throat and then pull the whole thing out your mouth.

Lauren Herley

1. How long have you been in Circa?  A little over 1 year.

2. What’s your favourite part of performing?  Giving my heart to the audience through what I love most, circus! Their acceptance and their partaking in this beautiful exchange gives me purpose everyday.

3. Have you performed in London before? Yes, I have done UK tours previously with Cirque Eloize and Circa.

4. What are you most looking forward to about spending your summer in London? Being able to dive in and do the same show consistently every night.  Giving a chance to take risks, improve, and make it richer every night.

5. If you had a giant purple cow, what would you name it? (our cow is named Violet!)  Lacta-lady.

6. Who are you closest to? My best friend Reuben.

7. Help us get closer to you, tell us something about yourself we wouldn’t expect.  I was homeschooled in a family of 4 children. I am the only blonde female in the family. I left home at 17 to devote my life to circus.

8. What’s your acrobatic party trick? Contortion handstand or touching my bum to my head.

Daniel O’Brien

1. How long have you been in Circa? I’ve worked at Circa for 2 years so far

2. What’s your favourite part of performing? The change from nervousness before the show into adrenaline as soon as the show starts

3. Have you performed in London before? Yes. I performed 'The Return' at the Barbican Centre earlier this year.

4. What are you most looking forward to about spending your summer in London? Enjoying the circus community in a different country.

5. If you had a giant purple cow, what would you name it? (our cow is named Violet!) Maude

6. Who are you closest to? Kimberley, being married makes us rather close

7. Help us get closer to you, tell us something about yourself we wouldn’t expect. I once attempted a food challenge to eat spicy chicken wings, failed, and drank 2 quarts of milk in a few minutes

8. What’s your acrobatic party trick? Handstands on fingers

Jarred Dewey

1. How long have you been in Circa? I have worked for Circa for five years.

2. What’s your favourite part of performing?  The amazing theatres it take us to.

3. Have you performed in London before? My first performance in London was with Circa at the Barbican in 2011 when I was employed as an understudy. One day I arrived for work and they thrust me upon the stage in one of Wunderkammmer’s improvisational scenes. It was terrifying!

4. What are you most looking forward to about spending your summer in London?  I want to feed the birds on the steps of St Paul’s Cathedral as featured in Mary Poppins! …but in all seriousness I can’t wait to sink my teeth into the many amazing galleries London has to offer and die of an art attack.

5. If you had a giant purple cow, what would you name it? (our cow is named Violet!)  I would call it by it’s scientific name ‘Purpura bos taurus’  (partially made up)

6. Who are you closest to? My cat.

7. Help us get closer to you, tell us something about yourself we wouldn’t expect. I am a true makeup junkie.

8. What’s your acrobatic party trick? You'll have to invite me to a party to find out.

Lisa Goldsworthy

1. How long have you been in Circa? I have been working for Circa on and off for almost 2 years now.

2. What’s your favourite part of performing? I love being able to express myself through an enjoyable medium. Being able to show others the skills I dedicate my whole life to learning is an incredible opportunity and when they love what they see is an even more incredible feeling.

3. Have you performed in London before? No, this will be my first time in London. I am excited to see what London audiences are like.

4. What are you most looking forward to about spending your summer in London? The fact that I will have an Australian summer and then go straight into a London summer. The year of summer!

5. If you had a giant purple cow, what would you name it? (our cow is named Violet!) Cupid

6. Who are you closest to? There are lost of people in my life who I am close to, all in different ways.

-I am physically close every day to all my fellow acrobats, as we throw and catch each other and climb on top of one another. We are also close like a family as when we are on tour we are each other’s family. We live together, work together, train and perform together, spend birthdays and Christmas together. We argue like best friends and love each other like siblings.

-I am close to my mum who helps me through everything and with who I share a lot with.

-I am close with my friends who help keep in sane in this crazy world.

-But I guess if I had to pick someone I was closest with, it would be my girlfriend, Marina. She sees me at my best and at my worst; she loves me and cares for me, as do I with her. We spend a lot of time apart doing long distance as I am often travelling with Circa for months on end, and yet our relationship still stays strong.

7. Help us get closer to you, tell us something about yourself we wouldn’t expect. I am a dedicated member of the Girl Guides Association and have been since I was 6 years old. I have a china doll collection. I never butter my bread. And I am very fussy and particular when it comes to other people telling me the time. “Don’t tell me its 4pm if its actually 3:58pm!”

8. What’s your acrobatic party trick? I can hold my left foot with my right hand in front of me, then jump through the gap with my other foot, all with out letting go of my left foot.
