Underbelly Festival Southbank 2019 Round Up!

7th Oct 2019

6 months and 170 shows later, Underbelly Festival Southbank is over for another year! Although the Autumn chill is creeping in, let’s go back down memory lane… April seems a lifetime ago.

We opened with our biggest programme yet! Filled with cheeky cabaret and spectacular circus, plus a jam-packed family programme for the Easter holidays, our first headliner A Simple Space from Gravity and Other Myths also opened to a host of fantastic reviews. The cast also took to BodyWorlds London and recreated some of the exhibits. Take a look at the video here.

Bernie Dieter’s Little Death Club opened in the Spiegeltent, beginning an epic 9 week run. We celebrated National Gin Day and even tried to get Bernie as a last minute Eurovision entry. We still can’t get the Emoji song out of our head!

Transit opened in May which saw the loveable Flip Fabrique team from Quebec flip, twirl, throw and skip their way around the Belly Theatre. They taught the Fun Kids Radio team how to toss a diablo and wowed audiences with their mad circus skills.

June saw the Australian cast of YUMMY storm West End Live in Leicester Square. The audience were LOVING their fabulous routines. See their performance here.

We also had our first Podcast Live season where we welcomed podcasts such as Griefcast, The Beef and Dairy Network and Pappy’s Flatshare to record live episodes in front of an audience over two weeks.

YUMMY then opened in the Spiegeltent in July with their joyful cabaret. On press night, we celebrated London Pride 2019 as dozens of drag performers and cabaret artists came together to watch the show and party the night away.

In August, whilst our moovellous crew in Edinburgh were smashing it up at the Fringe, the fun didn’t stop in London as we had performances from REFRESH, Twirlywoos and The Cocoa Butter Club

In September, the cast of the Rouge came straight to London from Scotland to paint the Spiegeltent red with their unique adult circus.

What an incredible 6 months - See you all next year!
