Kansas Smitty’s house bands reputation in london has always been synonymous with New Orleans. For this one off show on London’s Underbelly Festival Southbank they join forces with Memphis born pianist, Charlie Wood, for a night inspired by the self-proclaimed ""inventor of jazz"" Jelly Roll Morton’s infamous interview with song collector Alan Lomax.

When Jelly Roll moved to DC in 1935, he took up management of a bar called the Blue Moon Inn. It was here that Alan Lomax discovered the self-proclaimed ""inventor of jazz"" and invited him to interview for the Library of Congress. Jelly told all of the brothels he grew up in, his days as a pool shark, the notorious criminals he rubbed shoulders with and the corners of the globe that he reached. He also played versions of his compositions that cemented his genius in the annals of jazz history.

"I have been robbed of three million dollars all told. Everyone today is playing my stuff and I don't even get credit. Kansas City style, Chicago style, New Orleans style hell, they're all Jelly Roll style"" - Jelly Roll Morton"
